What Happens During Pet Surgery
The safety and comfort of your pet is our highest priority at the Potranco Veterinary Clinic. If your pet has been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery, the procedure will begin with the doctor performing a complete physical examination along with ordering testing and analysis of blood and urine samples in our diagnostic laboratory. This is done to detect any underlying conditions that might cause complications during the operation. The test results will also be used by the anesthesiologist to develop a customized anesthesia protocol for your pet if needed. Some types of surgery require general anesthesia to put the patient to sleep, while other types require only local anesthetic.
During the procedure, a catheter will be inserted and an IV will be attached to provide the fluids needed to maintain a stable blood pressure. A surgical tech will be assigned to constantly monitor your pet’s vital signs, watching for any signs of irregularities.
Post Surgery
After the surgery is completed, your pet will need to spend a few hours in a recovery room for rest and observation, and then they’ll be able to go home. Usually, they’ll be able to leave on the same day, but in some situations, your vet may want to keep them at the clinic overnight. You should plan for your pet to spend at least the whole day with us.
You’ll be instructed as to how to provide postoperative care at home, and you’ll have the opportunity to schedule any necessary follow-up appointments before you go. Generally, you’ll need to keep your pet indoors and away from physical exertion, and you might have to take steps to keep them from biting and licking their sutures.
